What kind of embryo is called "beauty"?

When we are looking for a partner in love, whether it's a man or a woman, we all prefer someone with good facial features and a good physique and temperament. And when selecting embryos, this rule also applies. In general, the more beautiful and attractive the embryo, the better its developmental potential.

The five types of embryos shown in Figure 1 are particularly beautiful in the eyes of embryologists. The beauty of early embryos mainly refers to the appropriate number and uniform size of blastomeres, with no or very few fragments. The beauty of blastocyst refers to the abundance and density of inner cell clusters, as well as the dense structure of trophoblast cells.

The development process of an embryo is a process of continuous cell division. The eggs we take in the operating room are cells, and the sperm are also cells. The combination of sperm and egg forms a new cell, and the continuous division process of this new cell is the process of embryonic development. Simply put, cell division is the process of dividing a cell into two smaller cells.

But in reality, this process is rigorous and complex, and multiple errors may occur during this period. Embryos with errors often have poor quality. What specific errors will occur? Mainly including abnormal number of divisions, uneven size of divisions, and the appearance of fragments during the division process.

What are the criteria for selecting blastocysts?

The 8-cell embryo continues to divide, with more and more cells in the embryo becoming relatively small. At this point, the embryo becomes a deflated balloon, and this state is called early blastocyst. As the cells continued to divide, the embryo swelled up like a balloon filled with air. At this point, as long as the inner cell mass and trophoblast meet the standards, the blastocyst can be used for transplantation or freezing. The following figure (Figure 5) shows the gradual expansion process of the blastocyst.

The scoring criteria for blastocysts mainly include: degree of blastocyst expansion, evaluation of inner cell mass, and evaluation of trophoblast. High quality blastocysts can be transplanted or frozen, while low-quality blastocysts are generally discarded.
